Create a new Commerce instance

Overview

Every WebSphere Commerce installation requires at least one instance to function. You need to create an instance in order to proceed with creating and deploying stores to the Commerce server.

Commerce supports the creation and running of multiple Commerce instances concurrently.

Use a different host name for each Commerce instance. For example...

This method involves the use of virtual host names.

Each host name for each instance requires its own IP address. The IP address must be valid on the network, with associated host names in the DNS server. The IP address must also be on the same VLAN as the IP address of the original instance.

The host name for each instance must resolve fully to separate IP addresses. To verify that you can run Commerce Configuration Manager and create multiple instances, run the nslookup command on both the host name and IP address for each instance. The host name should resolve to its correct IP address, and the IP address should resolve to its correct host name.

Multiple instances are used mainly to have different occurrences of Commerce that do not share information. Each instance will be unique.

Commerce instances have global security enabled by default during the instance creation process. WAS administrative security is enabled, but application security is by default disabled for performance reasons. The primary administrative user is a user from the built-in file registry. The instance creation process creates the user by initially taking the credentials you used to login to the Commerce Configuration Manager. You can change the primary administrative user in the Administrative Console.

To stop the Commerce application, use the username and password with stopServer.

You cannot create more than one instance at a time. Attempting to create multiple instances at the same time can cause errors.

For each additional WCS instance

Each additional Commerce instance requires its own datafile.

The table spaces and Oracle database IDs required by Commerce can be created when you create the instances.

If you have created a Commerce instance in the same session, restart the Commerce Configuration Manager before creating a Commerce Payments instance.

You are not required to create the WAS profile before creating the Commerce instance.

The Commerce Configuration Manager automatically creates the WAS profile that is used by the Commerce instance.

Ensure that the Commerce non-root user is part of the db2 user group

Procedure: Create an instance

  1. Execute prerequisites.

  2. Document instance information...

    Description Variable Value
    Commerce instance name WC_instance
    IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Host name host
    Domain name domain
    Fully qualified host name host.domain
    Commerce database name WC_db
    Commerce datafile name Oracle_datafile
    Commerce database user ID Oracle_user
    Commerce tablespace name WC_instanceTBLSPC

If you have an existing instance, you do not have to modify any of the parameter values for that instance in order to add an additional instance. You might want to modify some parameters of the original instance in order to better organize the multi-instance environment.

  3. Ensure you are logged as the non-root user.

  4. Start the Commerce Configuration Manager.

  5. Under WebSphere Commerce, expand...

hostname | Commerce | Instance List | Create Instance
    The Instance Creation wizard starts.

  6. Complete each panel of the Instance Creation wizard.

  7. When you have completed the necessary information in the panels, the Finish button is enabled.

Click Finish to create the Commerce instance.

The time required to create an instance depends on the speed of the system. You can also verify the progress of the instance creation by checking the following log file:

    WC_INSTALL/logs/WCSconfig.log

  8. When instance creation is complete, a dialog box appears containing a summary similar to the following:

Commerce instance demo is created under WAS profile demo.
The WAS administrative console port is 9060.
Restart the Web server to apply the changes to the Web server configuration file.

  9. Other dialog boxes may display containing additional instructions, ensure that you review the contents of the dialog boxes before dismissing them.

  10. Exit Configuration Manager...

    Console | Exit

  11. Verify the creation of the Commerce instance

  12. Complete mandatory post-creation tasks
