Unable to apply group membership while creating new user

Follow the steps listed here to troubleshoot if an error occurs when applying group membership while creating a user.

Problem

If you create a user through the administrative console, Users and Groups > Manage Users > Create, and then click Group Membership > Search, all the groups from all the repositories that are configured under federated repositories are returned by the search.

If you select one or more groups that are not in the same repository where the user is being created, and then click Add > Close to add the user to the selected groups, you might get the following error: “CWWIM1034E Missing repositoriesForGroups configuration for repository InternalFileRepository.” The user is created in the repository, but without any group membership.

The reason for this error is because the user is created in the configured default repository, which is the default File repository in this example, but the group applied belongs to another repository. For such cross-repository group membership configuration, the repositoriesForGroups property must be specified.

Out-of-the-box, only groups in database repositories support the members from other repositories. File repositories and LDAP repositories, including Microsoft Active Directory with multiple domains, do not support members from other repositories. For more information see the topic, Configure the database adapter.

Solution

  1. Ensure that the user is already created. If not, create the user without applying any group memberships.

  2. Click Users and Groups > Manager Users > user ID.

  3. Click the Groups tab, and then click Search. Only the groups from the user repository are returned.

  4. Select one or more groups that you want the user to be a member of, and then click Add.

  5. Click Close to add the user to the groups.
  6. The group membership is applied successfully.
