Install Web server plug-ins using a Windows workstation graphical interface

You can install a Web server plug-in on your i5/OS system using the installation wizard graphical interface run on a Windows workstation.

If you are running the application server on the same i5/OS server or logical partition as your Web server, you do not need to install a Web server plug-in. The Web server plug-in code and an HTTP profile template are included in the WebSphere Application Server installation.

If you are running your application server on a different i5/OS system or logical partition as the Web server, complete the steps in this topic to install a Web server plug-in for your i5/OS Web server.

Overview

You run the installation wizard on a Windows workstation for remote installation of the Web server plug-in to an i5/OS system. This topic describes how to use the installation wizard graphical interface to install the plug-in.

Procedure

  1. If TCP/IP is not started or if you don't know if TCP/IP is started, enter the Start TCP/IP (STRTCP) command on the Control Language (CL) command line.

  2. Verify that the host server jobs are started on your iSeries server. The host server jobs allow the installation code to run on iSeries.

On a CL command line, enter:

    STRHOSTSVR SERVER(*ALL)

  3. Verify that your user profile has the *ALLOBJ and *SECADM special authorities.

  4. Place the WebSphere Application Server Supplements disc in the disc drive of your workstation.

  5. Run the launchpad and select Launch the installation wizard for Web server plug-ins.

See Using the launchpad to start the installation.

  6. Enter your user profile, password, and the host name or IP address for the system on which you are installing the plug-in, and then click OK.

  7. In the installation wizard, do the following:

    1. On the Welcome panel, deselect Installation roadmap: overview and installation scenarios and click Next.

    2. On the Software License Agreement panel, select I accept the terms in the license agreement message if you agree to the license agreement, and click Next to continue.

    3. On the System prerequisites check panel:

      • If the operating system prerequisite check shows Passed, click Next.

      • If the check shows Failed, click Cancel. Install operating system service packs and patches needed for the plug-in, and then try installing the Web server plug-in again.

Web server plug-ins might function correctly even if some prerequisites are not installed on the system. However IBM recommends that you update your system to the required level.

    4. When prompted to select the Web server to configure, select None and click Next.

    5. On the Installation directory panel, specify the directories to which to install the plug-in and default profile, and then click Next.

Specify the target directories for the plug-in and default profile if you do not want to use the default directories.

Deleting the default target location and leaving an installation directory field empty prevents you from continuing the installation process.

    6. On the Installation Summary panel, click Next.

The installation wizard copies Web server plug-in files to your system and creates a profile to act as the location for putting key, certificate, or log files.

    7. On the Installation Results panel, click Finish.

  8. Verify the success of the installer program by examining installation wizard messages and the plugins_root/logs/install/log.txt file for installation status.

The installation program records the following indicators of success in the logs:

Results

You installed a Web server plug-in and profile on your i5/OS system.

What to do next

Use the IBM Web Administration for i5/OS wizards to configure your Web server instance. See Configuring an HTTP server instance for more information. The IBM Web Administration for i5/OS wizards perform the same the function as the Web server plug-ins installation on other platforms.

Create a profile for each additional Web server instance.
