Install packages using wizard mode

We can use Installation Manager to install packages. A package can be a product, a group of components, or a single component designed for Installation Manager to install.

Before we can install a package, Installation Manager must have access to the repository containing the package to install. If we have an IBM Passport Advantage account, we can install packages from the Passport Advantage site. If we are installing from a repository that is not on the Passport Advantage site, we must specify the repository in the preferences before we install. If we are installing fixes or updates or extensions, close the product to be updated or extended before installing the package. Some Installation Manager features might or might not be supported by packages. Check the package documentation to determine whether a feature is supported. For a list of features, see Installation Manager features. If we are installing using UNC paths, we must install silently. On Windows, if we are using a network drive, we must mount the drive. Use the pushd command to mount the drive. See Install Installation Manager and a package with UNC paths on Windows.

We can run Installation Manager in silent mode to install, update, and uninstall packages. For information about installing silently, see Installation roadmaps.

We can install updates at the same time that we install the base package.

Procedure

To install a package using wizard mode:

  1. In Installation Manager, click Install.

Installation Manager searches the defined repositories for available packages. If no available packages are found, verify that you listed the correct repository, see Repository preferences.

  2. If a new version of Installation Manager is found, we might be prompted to confirm the installation. Click Yes to proceed. Installation Manager automatically installs the new version, restarts, and resumes.

  3. The Install page of Installation Manager lists all the packages that were found in the repositories that Installation Manager searched. Only the most recent version of the package is shown. To show all versions of a package that Installation Manager finds, select Show all versions. Click a package version to show the package description in the Details pane. If more information about the package is available, a More info link is included at the end of the description text.

Some packages require entitlement for updates. If we are not entitled for an update, we cannot select the update. The Status column contains a Not entitled message for updates that are not entitled. Entitlement is based on your IBM ID credentials. For information about entitlement, see IBM Entitlement Help.

If we are running Installation Manager in group mode, we can install only packages that are enabled for installing in group mode. If the package is not enabled for installing in group mode, you receive an error and cannot continue with the package installation in group mode. See Group mode roadmaps and the user interface for more information about running Installation Manager in group mode.

  4. To search for fixes, updates, and extensions to the available packages, click Check for Other Versions, Fixes, and Extensions. Installation Manager searches for updates in the default update repositories for the packages.

    • For Installation Manager to search the default repository for the installed packages, the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates must be selected. This preference is selected by default and is on the Repositories preference page. If this preference is not checked, the Update wizard does not check the service repositories for package updates.

    • Typically, Internet access is required.

    • We can filter a list of fixes by clicking the Filter icon Filter icon.

If updates for a package are found, the updates are shown on the Install Packages page. Only the latest version of each package is shown.

Some packages require entitlement for fixes. If we are not entitled for a fix, we cannot select the fix. The Status column contains a Not entitled message for fixes that are not entitled. Entitlement is based on your IBM ID credentials. For more information, see IBM ID credentials Help and FAQ. For information about entitlement, see IBM Entitlement Help.

  5. Select the packages and updates to the packages to install. Updates that have a dependency relationship are automatically selected and cleared together. Click Next.

  6. On the Licenses page, read the license agreements for the selected packages. After you accept the license agreement, click Next to continue.

  7. On the Location page, enter the path for the shared resources directory in the Shared Resources Directory field. The shared resources directory contains resources that can be shared by multiple package groups. Click Next.

We can specify the shared resources directory only the first time that we install a package. Select the drive with enough available space to ensure adequate space for the shared resources of future packages. We cannot change the location of the shared resources directory unless we uninstall all packages.

  8. On the Location page, either choose a package group to install the packages into or create a package group. Click Next.

A package group is a directory that contains resources that packages share with other packages in the same group. The first time that we install a package, we must create a package group.

If we select more than one package to install, verify that the packages can be installed in the same package group by checking the documentation for the packages. For packages that cannot be installed in the same package group, install one package in one package group. After the installation completes, install the second package in a different package group.

The bit mode of the package shows in the Architecture column when we install on a 64-bit operating system. For new package groups, the option to select either 32-bit or 64-bit shows under the Installation Directory field. For existing package groups, the option for 32-bit or 64-bit is disabled. We cannot change the bit mode of an existing package group.

Restriction: We cannot install a 32-bit package in to a 64-bit package group.

  9. On the next Location page, select the translations to install for packages in the package group. The corresponding language translations for the graphical user interface and documentation are installed. Choices apply to all packages installed in this package group. Click Next to continue.

  10. On the Features page, select the package features to install.

    1. Optional: To see the dependency relationships between features, select Show Dependencies.

    2. Optional: Click a feature to view its brief description under Details.

    3. Select or clear features in the packages. Installation Manager automatically enforces dependencies with other features and shows updated download size and disk space requirements for the installation. To restore the default features that are selected for the packages, click Restore default.

  11. When we are finished selecting features, click Next.

  12. On the Summary page, review your choices before installing the packages.

On Windows, Installation Manager checks for running processes. If processes are blocking the installation, a list of these processes is shown in the Blocking Processes section. We must stop these processes before you continue the installation. Click Stop All Blocking Processes. If there are no processes that must be stopped, we do not see this list. The running processes lock files that must be accessed or modified by Installation Manager.

  13. Click Install. When the installation process completes, you receive a confirmation message.
