Scenario: Business activity monitoring for IBM BPM Standard

The Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) for IBM BPM Standard scenario shows you how to monitor process applications that were built using IBM Process Designer and deployed to IBM BPM Standard.

The business author who uses IBM Process Designer to define a BPMN process application can specify IBM Business Monitor tracking definitions for the process application without having to use a separate tool.

IBM BPM features, such as deploying from the repository and sharing of assets, versioning, and governance, also apply to monitor model artifacts. The playback feature of Process Designer and Process Center includes the ability to visualize what is being monitored through a generated process application-specific Business Monitor dashboard. The power of iterative playback before release to test or staging applies equally well to the design of the process itself and to the monitoring of the process.

Important: This scenario is available only if IBM BPM Standard and Business Monitor are running in the same JVM or cell. If you choose to run Business Monitor in a separate cell from IBM BPM Standard, use IBM Integration Designer to perform the following steps:

  1. Generate a monitor model for your process application in the Monitor Model editor.
  2. Generate the Java EE projects.
  3. Export the EAR file.
  4. Deploy that EAR file to the Monitor cell.

This scenario involves the following activities:

  1. Scenario: Enabling the application for monitoring

You use IBM Process Designer to create or update a process application. From Process Designer, you indicate that you want to monitor the process application by selecting the Enable Process Monitoring through IBM Business Monitor option for that process application.

  2. Scenario: Specifying metrics to track
The monitor model that is generated when you enable business monitoring includes default metrics and KPIs. You can also specify custom metrics to track and also include additional KPIs in your business process definitions (BPDs).
  3. Scenario: Deploying monitoring and running a process instance

You use the Update Tracking Definitions option to start the monitoring of the process application. This option generates a monitor model and deploys it to the server.

  4. Scenario: Viewing the dashboards
When you run the business process definition (BPD) in the Inspector view or when the process application snapshot is deployed, monitoring data is collected and sent to a custom dashboard. You use Monitor dashboard spaces to view the dashboard.
