With IBM WebSphere Portal V6.1, Document Manager components are no longer installed with WebSphere Portal. Document Manager features are now consolidated in IBM Lotus Quickr to provide improved performance, scaling, and modularity; and to align with the unified strategy for document management solutions.

Entitlements to Lotus Quickr within the WebSphere Portal offerings

The WebSphere Portal offerings now include two entitlements to Lotus Quickr. One of these entitlements is available specifically for the offerings and products whereby WebSphere Portal Document Manager is replaced with Lotus Quickr Document Libraries:

Benefits of moving documents to Lotus Quickr document libraries

Consider the benefits of replacing WebSphere Portal Document Manager with Lotus Quickr Document Libraries:

General process for moving documents to Lotus Quickr document libraries

To replace WebSphere Portal Document Manager components with Lotus Quickr Document Libraries, follow this general process:

  1. Install Lotus Quickr Services for WebSphere Portal separately from WebSphere Portal.

There are multiple ways to achieve this, including installing Lotus Quickr on a separate logical or virtual partition from the portal server or on a different physical server.

  2. Use the Document Library template that is included in Lotus Quickr Services for WebSphere Portal.

  3. After the Lotus Quickr server is installed, delete all other templates other than the Document Library template from the server.

This is important because the IBM WebSphere Portal license does not entitle you to use other templates on the Lotus Quickr server.

  4. Establish single sign-on (SSO) capability between the Lotus Quickr server and the WebSphere Portal server.

  5. For complete information, refer to the IBM Lotus Quickr Information Center.

Future initiatives to support migration and integration of document management solutions

Utilities will be available in the future to support the automated migration of existing document management solutions:

If you are storing documents in WebSphere Portal Document Manager from previous releases, watch the IBM Passport Advantage site for a migration tool that will be available in the future.

Do not perform an in-place upgrade of any servers running WebSphere Portal Document Manager because this could result in data loss. Details on the migration tool, its availability, and documentation will be announced as they become available.

If you are storing documents in WebSphere Portal Document Manager from previous releases and integrate WCM , be aware that while you can store files and content outside of WCM – for example, in Lotus Quickr – and link back to WCM , this technique does not provide complete integration. A future release of WCM will support full-scale integration with Lotus Quickr.

Additionally, a migration utility will also be available to move content from WebSphere Portal Document Manager into the WCM Java Content Repository (JCR) while still providing link integrity for your sites. Details on this planned migration utility, its availability and documentation, will be announced as they become available.

Options for integrating Lotus Quickr within WebSphere Portal

IBM My Places Portlet

The My Places portlet provides a more integrated way to work with a personalized list of Lotus Quickr places to which a user has access. From the My Places portlet, you can display all Lotus Quickr places that you are a member of, public places, all places to which you have access, and places that you have marked as Favorites. Display a place by clicking a place link in the My Places portlet. An administrator can configure the portlet to retrieve places from specific J2EE and Domino servers.

IBM Feed Reader Portlet

Any page within Lotus Quickr can be rendered as an ATOM feed. The IBM Feed Reader portlet enables users to read RSS and Atom feeds from various content providers, including news, information, and solutions Web sites. Users can add and delete multiple feeds from various content providers. This portlet supports basic authentication and time-out parameters. The portlet also supports proxy authentication. The IBM Feed Reader portlet is AJAX-based, providing improved client-side performance.

To consume Lotus Quickr pages within the context of a WebSphere Portal page, direct the Feed Reader portlet to Lotus Quickr content.

IBM WebSphere Portal - Lotus Quickr and IBM Lotus Connections Integrated Person Card

This Integrated Person Card enables WebSphere Portal and Lotus Quickr users to link to the features of Lotus Connections, from within a person card. Integrating the person card information from Lotus Connections with the person card information from WebSphere Portal or Lotus Quickr allows you link to the Profile, Communities, Blogs, Bookmarks, and Activities for a person from within his or her person card in WebSphere Portal or Lotus Quickr.

IBM Web Application Integrator for IBM WebSphere Portal

A newer capability for any Web application, most notably Lotus Quickr, is the addition of IBM Web Application Integrator, which is a solution that allows external Web applications to be integrated with WebSphere Portal v6x and WebSphere Portal Express v6x. The Web Application Integrator allows WebSphere Portal customers to centralize access to external Web applications within the enterprise. Examples of such external Web applications include home-grown, in-house Web applications as well as IBM Web-based products like Lotus Connections, Lotus Domino Web Application, and Lotus Quickr.

REST Services Builders for IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory

Another area where the entitlement has changed is the ability to utilize Lotus Quickr APIs to create portlets and widgets within the context of WebSphere Portal. Lotus Quickr implements many of its features using a REST-based API, with more REST-based features planned.

WebSphere Portlet Factory provides a set of builders to speed the creation of portlets based upon REST. Sample Lotus Quickr portlets come with WebSphere Portlet Factory installation.

Integrating Lotus Quickr into WebSphere Portal Search

Set up search services for remote Lotus Quickr servers. Then make the services available to Portal Search so that users can search across content on all the servers.
