Update the Update Installer for WebSphere Software

This topic describes how to get the latest copy of the Update Installer for WebSphere Software. There are two ways to get updates for the Update Installer for WebSphere Software.

• Apply the latest WebSphere Application Server for i5/OS group PTF. For more information on the i5/OS group PTF, refer to Installing the WebSphere Application Server group PTF.

• Download from the Support site and reinstall, which is covered in this topic.

Note: You only need to install the Update Installer on your system at any one time for use with all version 6.1 products. Before installing a newer version of the Update Installer, first remove the existing Update Installer. You can use the Update Installer to update any v6.1 installed product.

The later releases of the Update Installer will be able to install or uninstall any v6.1 maintenance that were released prior to the release of the most recent Update Installer.

Overview

This topic describes how to update the Update Installer after you installed it into a product.

Procedure

1. Uninstall the Update Installer.

   Run the uninstall command in the updi_root/bin directory.

2. Download the updated Update Installer files from the product Support site.

   See Recommended Updates for WebSphere Application Server. Look under your release of the WebSphere software for a link to the Update Installer download page.

   Ensure that the updi_root directory no longer exists or is empty. If it is not, run the following Qshell command before reinstalling: rm -R updi_root. For example, rm -R /QIBM/ProdData/WebSphere/UpdateInstaller/V61/updi.

3. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on the system from which you will perform the install. The Update Installer can be installed remote from a Windows workstation or locally from a Qshell session on your i5/OS system.

4. Install the new Update Installer.

   • For remote GUI installation, do the following:

     1. Open Windows Explorer and select your disc drive.

     2. Click the downloaded_path\UpdateInstaller\install.exe file to start the InstallShield for Multiplatforms (ISMP) program.

   • For local silent QSH installation, run the INSTALL command from Qshell.

     1. On a CL command line, run the STRQSH command to start the Qshell command shell.

     2. Issue the INSTALL command to start the installation program.

        cd downloaded_path/UpdateInstaller
        INSTALL -options path/responsefile

Results

The Update Installer is installed under the root directory that you specified during installation. The update installer is installed to /QIBM/ProdData/WebSphere/UpdateInstaller/V61/updi unless you modified the installLocation option.
