Install the Update Installer for WebSphere Software

The Update Installer for WebSphere Software has a new installation program for V6.1, Installation Wizard for the Update Installer. The Update Installer now uses the Common Install Engine for WebSphere Software. A single installation of the Update Installer can be used to install maintenance on the following WebSphere software products:

• IBM WebSphere Application Server V6 or above

• IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment Version 6 or above

• IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express V6 or above

• IBM Application Client for WebSphere Application Server Version 6 or above

• Web server plug-ins for WebSphere Application Server Version 6 or above

• IBM WebSphere Extended Deployment V5.1 or above

• IBM HTTP Server V6 or above

• IBM WebSphere Process Server V6.0 or above

• IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus V6.0.1 or above

The Update Installer ships on the V6.1 supplements disc.

• Only one copy of the Update Installer should be installed on your system at any one time for use with all V6.x products. Before installing a newer version of the Update Installer, first remove the existing Update Installer.

• The user account that originally installed the WebSphere Application Server product to be updated should be used to launch the Installation Wizard to install the Update Installer, and the same user account should be used to launch the Update Installer program to update a product.

  • When a different user account uses the updi_root location, that user account must have reading and running access to that location. It must also have writing access to the updi_root/logs directory and its subdirectory.

  • When a different user account is used to update the target WebSphere Application Server product location, that user account must have full access (reading, writing, and running) to the target location where a maintenance package is to be applied.

• Verify no processes from any users are locking any files in the target location where a maintenance package is to be installed.

Hardware and software requirements

The hardware and software requirements for the Update Installer are the same as the product or component requirements that the Update Installer is used to update. For example, you can use the Update Installer to install maintenance for WebSphere software on distributed platforms and iSeries platforms. The Update Installer does not install maintenance for WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.

The official statements of support for hardware and software for the IBM WebSphere Application Server V6.1 are on the IBM WebSphere Application Server supported hardware and software Web site. The Web site lists all supported operating systems and the operating system fixes and patches that install to have a compliant operating system.

Overview

This topic describes how to install the Update Installer from the installation image provided in the product package.

Procedure

1. Install one of the products that the Update Installer can update.

2. Uninstall any previously installed Update Installer products. Use the installRegistryUtils command to examine installation locations for the installed Update Installer products.

   • The command file is a script named installRegistryUtils in the app_server_root/bin directory.

3. Insert the supplements disc in a disk drive.

   Mount the drive if necessary.

4. Change directories to the UpdateInstaller directory on the supplements disc.

5. Issue the install command or the install -silent command.

6. Identify the installation root where you intend to install the Update Installer.

7. Install the code.

Results

The Update Installer is installed under the root directory that you specified during installation.
