WebSphere Portal for iSeries offers three installation methods:

  1. interface
  2. console
  3. silent with response file

With the install program one can run Install Only or run Install and Configure. With Install Only, files are copied from the media to portal_server_root in preparation for installation, whereas with the Install and Configure option the installation tasks are run.

Installation tasks include:

  1. Creating a WebSphere Application Server profile
  2. Moving files into a user profile (app_server_root )
  3. Updating files
  4. Creating a Cloudscape database
  5. Deploying portlets
  6. Enabling security

Install and configure must be run to install WebSphere Portal.

We can install more than one copy of WebSphere Portal on the same machine and have each WebSphere Portal operate independently of the others. Each copy of WebSphere Portal must be installed on a separate WebSphere Application Server profile. Using the chosen installation method and mode you install the first copy of WebSphere Portal on an existing WebSphere Application Server profile, and then, by invoking the installer program again, the default Config only option allows the installation of an additional portal copy on a separate WebSphere Application Server profile.

Once you have determined the installation method and mode, it is highly recommended that you review Installation scenarios before installing WebSphere Portal. The Installation scenarios topic walks you through all the steps needed to get the portal server up and running, including planning, installation, configuration, verification, and if necessary, troubleshooting. The following installation modes are available for WebSphere Portal :

Not all installation methods and options are available, depending upon the mode you choose for installation. Refer to the table below for the options and methods available.

Remote with GUI

The WebSphere Portal GUI program runs on a Windows PC connected to the iSeries server. You point and click through a series of screens, occasionally typing in information as required.

The GUI is available only for remote installation. Text interface is available for all others.

Remote or local 5250 session with console (text interface)

The console method includes much of the same content as the GUI, but presented in text format. To make selections, you type in the number corresponding to the appropriate option displayed on screen and press Enter.

The console method is available for both local and remote installation modes.

Remote or local with response file (silent)

Rather than entering information as the installation progresses, with this installation mode you specify a response file from which the installation program can gather all the information it needs. You have the option of overriding any values contained in the response file by entering them as parameters on a command line when the installation is launched.

Installing with a response file is available for both local and remote installation. IBM recommends for advanced users, or those with highly customized installation requirements.
