Overview

The IBM WebSphere Edge Components, which are part of IBM WAS Network Deployment V5.1, reduce Web server congestion, increase content availability, and improve Web server performance.

The following functions are included in the Edge Components of IBM WAS Network Deployment V5.1:

1. Load Balancer
2. Caching Proxy

WebSphere Edge Components are supported on a wide range of operating systems, including AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows 2000.

 

Load Balancer overview

The Load Balancer is responsible for load balancing traffic to servers that are in a LAN or WAN. Load Balancer consists of the following five components that can be used separately or together:

1. Dispatcher component
2. Content Based Routing for HTTP and HTTPS
3. Site Selector
4. Cisco CSS Controlller
5. Nortel Alteon Controller
