Web servers

Appservers can work with a Web servers to handle requests for web application (.war)s using HTTP plug-ins to communicate.

If you specify a Web server when installing WebSphere Application Server, the installation program tweaks the Web server configuration file for you and establishes a plug-in.

Web servers are not required for test environments, as you can use internal HTTP transport, but Web servers (or hardware load balancers) are recommended for production environments.
